peter alexander joins us live from queens, new york. peter, good morning. >> reporter: savannah, good morning to you. it's going to be up to the national weather service to make the official determination today if a tornado hit in new york city. if it did happen, it would be the second one in three months. but before that it had been three years. let's give you a sense of what some of the damage this morning looks like. ronnie, if you push the camera in, this is the top floor of a three-story apartment building that was really just knocked by these powerful winds in queens yesterday. you can see where the roof was literally peeled off, like the top of a sardine can. a short time ago i spoke to julio, one of 24 people that was forced to relocate from this building after the fact. he told me that he was in that apartment with both his wife, who is seven months pregnant, and her mother. that he was knocked bia table. he was has a big scar on the front of his head where he was hit. fortunately the only injuries throughout this area, with th

why are they against us trying to stimulate jobs by giving tax cuts to the middle class? why are they against us stimulating jobs by giving tax breaks to small businesses which, this fact, are the ones that create the jobs? why don't thiey think it's important to develop alternative energy and all the jobs that would flow from those jobs and encourage manufacturing to stay in the united states? why is it they don't support the president's proposal to continue our increase in infrastructure which would be necessary even if we had full employment? i know what they're against. they're against all those things. i just don't know what they're for. >> don't miss lawrence o'donnell's last word on the biggest issues and most compelling stories of the day. nbc's kristen welker joins us from burbank with the latest. any progress made with investigators looking for these people? >> reporter: no, not yet, alex. and it's certainly a tense situation here in southern california. but we can tell you that investigators will be scouring the wilderness areas surrounding palmdale. that's about an hour north of los angeles. they're really going to be focusing on the remote areas there in that wilderness. they couldn't see those areas when they were searching last night. again, they are looking for 1 people. five adults -- 13 people. five adult, eight children ages 3 through 17. again this all came to their attention yesterday afternoon when two huhs of the missing women came forward to police and said they were concerned about where their family members could be, particularly worried because they found a purse. inside that wupurse, cell phone personal documents, and really disturbing letters. take a listen to how a spokesperson with the sheriff's department described those letters. >> they left behind notes
